What are the advantages and disadvantages of blockboard?
Many people may not be familiar with blockboard, but they will immediately recognize it by its other name-solid core board. Blockboard, also known as solid core board, is one of the commonly used materials for decoration. Before deciding whether to use blockboard in home decoration, let us first understand what blockboard is.
细木工板 is developed on the basis of plywood production technology, so it can be regarded as a special type of plywood. Its core is made of spliced wooden strips or hollow boards, which is then covered with two or more layers of plywood on both sides, and finally processed and pressed through an adhesive bonding process.
This panel boasts many advantages: it is easy to process, lightweight yet durable, with a smooth surface and strong screw-holding capacity. Therefore, in home decoration, it is often used for furniture making and interior decoration.
Blockboard requires high manufacturing standards. It not only needs sufficient space for the wood to undergo adequate natural conditioning and drying, but also strict process control through professional kiln drying.
In addition, the quality of processing equipment requires substantial capital investment, and it is crucial to ensuring the machining accuracy and product quality.
Especially after the country enforced mandatory limits on hazardous substances in decoration and building materials, the adhesives used in blockboard production must be upgraded. This single factor alone increases production costs by about 10%. Coupled with the rising prices of raw materials, it is impossible to produce genuine eco-friendly blockboard at fifty or sixty yuan.
For E1 grade blockboard that meets national standards, a price of around 90 yuan already leaves only a slim profit margin.
If consumers still blindly pursue low prices and buy cheap, inferior blockboard that seriously endangers human health, formal manufacturers will find it difficult to survive.
The advantages of blockboard are as follows:
- Lightweight yet Sturdy and Durable
We generally assume that sturdy and durable boards tend to be heavy, but some boards surprisingly achieve both lightness and strength. Fine blockboard is one such building material. Since they are made by bonding thin wood veneers under pressure, they offer greater dimensional stability and are less prone to deformation compared to solid wood boards.
2.Smooth and Aesthetically Pleasing Surface
The manufacturing process of fine blockboard ensures a very smooth surface, free from noticeable bumps or defects. Thanks to this smoothness and aesthetic appeal, combined with the possibility of applying various surface treatments—such as painting or veneering—their decorative effect and protective performance can be significantly enhanced.
3.Excellent Screw-Holding Capacity and High Strength
Fine woodworking boards exhibit high stability, making them resistant to warping or cracking. Their surfaces possess strong screw-holding power, and with low moisture content, these boards demonstrate excellent adaptability during processing. This makes them particularly convenient for customized fabrication tasks.
Here is the translation of the disadvantages of blockboard:
1.High Formaldehyde Emissions
Due to the extensive use of urea-formaldehyde glue during production, blockboard generally exhibits high levels of formaldehyde release. Consequently, their environmental protection standards are often relatively low. This is the primary reason why most blockboard emits a pungent odor.
2.Weak Vertical Bending Strength
Since the internal solid wood strips are spliced longitudinally, the board has poor vertical bending and compressive strength. Long-term stress can lead to noticeable horizontal deformation (warping) of the board.
3.Environmental Hazards from On-Site Processing
Because the surface of blockboard is relatively rough, carpentry work done on-site typically requires the heavy application of glues or paints to finish the surface. As a result, furniture made from these boards is highly un-eco-friendly. This is a major cause of the intense chemical smells often encountered during renovation. Such site-built furniture is considered a primary culprit behind carcinogenic risks and potential genetic mutations, posing severe health hazards to humans.
